The Dutch defender was an unused substitute as the Blues slipped to a disappointing 2-1 reversal at Old Trafford. A number of Red Devils stars shared their thoughts in the wake of that win, with Morocco international midfielder Amrabat among those.

Amrabat said on Instagram: “Great spirit and great performance! Thanks for the amazing support.” Rather surprisingly, Maatsen was among those to leave a comment. He responded with a fire and saluting emoji before hastily deleting the post.

He did not hit delete quickly enough, though, with eagle-eyed Chelsea supporters spotting what he had done. Some Blues fans have suggested that Maatsen’s career at Stamford Bridge “is now over”, while others have branded his actions “an absolute joke”.

Maatsen, who helped Burnley to win promotion into the Premier League during a productive loan spell last season, has taken in 10 appearances for Chelsea in the 2023-24 campaign. His contract in west London was due to expire next summer, but it is reported that the Blues have triggered a 12-month extension to those terms.
