According to The Mirror, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is being lined up as a replacement to Mark Hughes at Southampton.
The Saints have now gone nine league games without a win, and are languishing in 18th place in the Premier League. The team have only managed one league win this season, the joint fewest in England’s top four leagues, and the writing looks on the wall for Hughes.
However, while Rodgers would certainly be a great addition at St Mary’s, it just does not seem like a move that will happen. Celtic are currently top of the Scottish Premiership, and are on course for a historic third domestic treble in a row. In two seasons at Celtic Park, the Northern Irishman’s success is unprecedented- this would be a challenge that he surely would not want to accept.
However, Rodgers’ feud with the board at Celtic has been no secret. He believes that the club have not provided him with the funds to compete in Europe, and tensions grew after the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League this summer.
The thing is, he would not necessarily gain the financial backing that he seeks if he moved to Southampton. He may get more than at Celtic, but he will surely want to take over a side that are challenging for a European place.
There is no doubting that Rodgers wants to make it back to the Premier League after he unceremoniously left Liverpool, but he has surely done more than enough to earn a move to a club higher than Southampton, who appear to be perennial strugglers in the league.
