Central to their midweek victory was Raphinha. The Brazilian set up Fermin Lopez for the first goal in the second leg and was a constant threat against the Italian side. He should have had a goal of his own, having four attempts, one of which hit the post.

Veteran centre-back Mats Hummels was one of the pivotal figures in the win, making five interceptions as well as a host of clearances to help goalkeeper Gregor Kobel keep a clean sheet against the Dutch side.
