Everton owner Farhad Moshiri, director of football Marcel Brands and new manager Marco Silva may well be identifying players to come in – one of which is a powerful attacker who bosssed Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka in 2018 – and sort the problem positions they have in the team already, but perhaps it isn’t an issue that they need to throw big money at.
Moshiri would have been expecting big things from the Merseyside outfit during the 2018/19 campaign following a big summer of investment, but instead they struggled under Ronald Koeman before his replacement Sam Allardyce eventually steered them to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League.
Despite the Toffees’ spending, it was painfully obvious that they had a number of weak areas in the starting XI – especially when they were suffering from injuries and suspensions – and that some major squad maintenance was needed during the close season.
However, there are a number of youth players that will feel that they have the ability to make the step up to be a first-team regular next term, and it could be a scenario that suits Moshiri both in terms of promoting their academy system and prevent him having to fork out too much money once again.
Here are three Everton youngsters who could save Silva a fortune this summer…
With Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka getting no younger and perhaps not good enough to start on a regular basis for Everton next season, and the future of Ramiro Funes Mori seemingly in doubt, one of Silva’s priorities may well be to find a new centre-back partner for Michael Keane.
While the Portuguese boss may have his own targets in mind, he could look to bring 19-year-old central defender Feeney into first-team contention instead – especially after he impressed when making his first start for the Merseyside outfit in their 3-0 Europa League win against Limassol back in December.
With Baines getting to an age where he can no longer get up and down the pitch like he once did, Everton may well look to bring a new energetic left-back to Goodison Park this summer.
While Moshiri may want to bring a new player to the club, the solution to their problem may already be in their squad in the form of Robinson.
The attacking 20-year-old impressed during a loan spell with Bolton Wanderers during the 2017/18 campaign – providing four assists in 30 Championship appearances – and he picked up his first United States cap against Bolivia last week.
Everton may have brought Cenk Tosun to the club during the January transfer window, but perhaps they need a big centre-forward to provide competition for the Turkey international this summer.
Scotland U21 international Hornby may well be perfect man with the job, with the 18-year-old making his first-team debut as a lone striker in the 3-0 win against Limassol in December.
While he wasn’t a huge figure in the match, he showed some good hold-up play and plenty of impressive touches to suggest that he has a big role to play at Goodison Park in the future – perhaps starting from next term.
