According to Fabrizio Romano, the Frenchman will join the Ligue 1 team – where former Manchester United man Mason Greenwood now plays – on loan with a mandatory buy option and is set for a medical. The former Brighton forward then quote tweeted Romano's post and uploaded a clip of Shawshank character Andy Dufresne celebrating breaking out of prison – maybe signalling the 28-year-old's relief at inching towards a Goodison Park exit.

Maupay's move to Everton has proven to be a disaster. He swapped Brighton for the Toffees two years ago but he scored just one goal in 32 appearances following his £15m ($20m) transfer. Last season, the striker was on loan at former team Brentford but returned to Merseyside this summer. Ahead of his impending exit, Maupay clapped back at Everton fans who booed him and his team-mates after their 4-0 loss to Tottenham at the weekend but now it seems his time with the club is over.

Romano later clarified that Maupay will sign on a €500,000 loan fee, plus a €5.5m (£4.6m/$6m) fixed fee as an obligation to buy. There is also €3m in add-ons and Everton have a 20 per cent sell-on clause. That brings the total fee to €9m (£7.5m/$10m) and goes some way to recouping the initial outlay they paid for him in 2022.

If Maupay does move to Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille side, he could make his club debut against Toulouse in Ligue 1 action on Saturday night. If not, a home game against Nice in the league on September 14 could be his first bow for the French club.
