Arsenal will look to bounce back from successive Premier League defeats when they host eighth-placed West Bromwich Albion at the Emirates Stadium on Boxing Day.
Despite taking the lead in both matches, the Gunners were beaten 2-1 away at Everton and Manchester City respectively last week, and manager Arsene Wenger will demand a reaction from his players to give the supporters some festive cheer.
Those losses have left the north London outfit nine points behind their neighbours from the capital, Chelsea, at the summit, and they will look to avoid a repeat of the disaster they suffered on December 26, 2015.
Well in contention for the Premier League title, Arsenal travelled south to face an out-of-form Southampton at St Mary’s, but they were convincingly beaten 4-0 by Saints on a miserable evening for Wenger and his team.
But it’s not always been bad news for the Gunners on Boxing Day – here’s a look at Arsenal’s three greatest Boxing Day strikes of the Premier League era…
Robin van Persie vs Watford – December 26, 2006
A struggling Arsenal side moved up to third in the Premier League table after beating Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road, and it was all thanks to Van Persie’s brilliant late winner.
Gilberto Silva had given the Gunners the lead against the run of play, before Tommy Smith equalised for the hosts. The match seemed to be heading for a draw before the Dutch striker’s intervention.
Theo Walcott played Van Persie in down the right-hand side, and as he entered the penalty area, he cut back on to his left foot before curling a wonderful finish into the far corner.
Pure brilliance.
Thierry Henry (First goal) vs Leicester City – December 26, 2000
Following a disappointing run of form, Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes had been dealt a blow, but they got them back on track as they thrashed Leicester 6-1 at Highbury to give their supporters some festive cheer.
Thierry Henry was the star man as he netted a hat-trick, and his first strike just after the half-hour mark was certainly one to remember.
Robert Pires floated a corner to just outside the area where the his French compatriot was waiting. Henry smashed a half-volley into the bottom corner to set the Gunners on their way to a huge victory.
Davor Suker vs Coventry City – December 26, 1999
As has become so frequent in recent seasons, Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes suffered a big setback when they were beaten 3-2 by Coventry at Highfield Road on Boxing Day, 1999.
Gary McAllister and Mustapha Hadji gave the Sky Blues a 2-0 lead but despite Freddie Ljungberg pulling one back for the visitors, Robbie Keane ensured the hosts took the points.
However, with four minutes remaining, Suker did score the goal of the game. A long ball forward from Emmanuel Petit was well controlled by the Croatian in the box, and he beat two men before finishing with the outside of his foot via the post. Class.
