In today’s Tottenham Hotspur roundup, we take a look at what news has been doing to rounds for the Lilywhites. Daniel Levy is determined to keep Harry Kane who he values at £250m, reports have revealed their plans for the January transfer window, and Massimiliano Allegri is ready to take the Spurs job as club chiefs fear Mauricio Pochettino will quit.
Levy prepared to fight for Kane
Report: As reported by the Telegraph, chairman Levy is set to fight for the future of superstar Kane after the fears he could leave heightened after the shock defeat to Colchester United in the Carabao Cup. It is believed that the striker may try and head for the exit door if Spurs find themselves without a trophy again with the reports suggesting that Levy has priced Kane at a world record fee of £250m.
Verdict: It’s fairly simple – Spurs can’t let him go. Not only would the club lose their best and most important player, they are also losing arguably the best striker in world football, which is not exactly something Tottenham can replace overnight.
The Englishman is still tied down to a contract until 2024, which should give Levy hope he stays, as in today’s climate it would be a shock to see Kane go for less than £100m considering he is still just 26 and having already established himself as one of the English football’s greats by scoring 169 goals in 260 games for his boyhood club.
Furthermore, if Levy does value the two time Golden Boot winner at £250m, that could well scare away the super clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, with such a hefty fee potentially testing the boundaries of Financial Fair Play.
Allegri ready for Spurs job
Report: Former Juventus manager Allegri is ready to take the Spurs job as club chiefs fear Pochettino could leave the club at the end of the season, according to the Sun. It is believed that, after taking a year out from management, the Italian is waiting in the wings should the Argentine call it a day in north London.
Verdict: The former Southampton boss has been at Tottenham for five years now and after the embarrassing defeat at Colchester in the League Cup there are concerns he may pack his bags, with Real Madrid looming.
Once again, Spurs are potentially staring at another trophyless season, with perhaps the FA Cup the only realistic piece of silverware for the club, as they are the ninth favourites to win the Champions League. Indeed, whilst the FA Cup would certainly be an achievement, the chiefs in charge may consider a move for someone like Allegri to be more beneficial for the team, given his track record.
The 52-year-old has won six Serie A titles in his homeland, with five of them coming in consecutive years at Juventus after his first title-winning season at A.C Milan back in 2010-11.
Winning five league titles in a row and four Italian Cups in consecutive years is extra special, and almost unheard of. But having also won the league title with Milan eight years ago proves he is not just a one-trick pony who can only win with a super team like Juventus.
If Spurs are to lose Pochettino, bagging themselves this Italian legend could only be good news for the club.
Pochettino’s January plans squandered
Report: As reported by Football Insider, Tottenham are unlikely to recruit more than two senior players in January, despite the manager calling for a massive overhaul in the next few windows. The reports states that the club will have to wait until the summer.
Verdict: It is not often that clubs spend such drastic amounts on players in January anyway, so it would have been somewhat surprising to see Spurs splash the cash especially considering they signed nobody this January window, but recruited five new faces in the summer.
The winter window has usually been the time for teams to add more squad depth or fix an injury crisis, rather than find a new star. Only 30 players were signed in the previous January window, as opposed to the many, many more who joined in the summer.
There is also a lingering question over Pochettino’s future. As alluded to earlier, there are fears he may leave at the end of the season, and perhaps Levy is not allowing the Argentine to spend much knowing that he may depart soon.
